Volunteer Opportunities

Planning Commission

Two Openings 

The planning commission is charged with land use and land development. They make recommendations to Council. These are four-year terms. 


Zoning Hearing Board

Four Openings 

The Zoning Hearing Board hears and renders recommendations to Council regarding specific types of land use actions, including requests for variances. This is a three-year term. 


Civil Service Commission

One Opening for an Alternate 

The Civil Service Commission is an entity that regulates the employment of civil servants. In Sharpsburg, this Commission certifies the hiring list for full-time police officers. This is a six-year term. 


Property Maintenance Appeals Board

One Opening 

The Property Maintenance Appeals Board hears appeals from individuals who have been sent a notice for property maintenance code violations. This is a three-year term. 


Vacancy Board

One Opening and Appointed Yearly 

If there is a vacancy that must be filled (Council, Mayor, Tax Collector) and Council is unable to fill the position for any reason within 30 days, then the Vacancy Board shall fill the position within 15 days. This is a one-year term. 


Human Rights Commission

Three Openings (1 one-year term and 2 two-year terms) 

The Human Rights Commission works on issues related to human rights in the borough. They can educate and provide recommendations to Council. Term lengths vary. 


Parks and Recreation Board

Three Openings (term length) 

The Parks and Recreation Board works on issues related to the community parks and recreational events and opportunities in the borough. They organize evetns and provide recommendations to Council. Term lengths vary. 


Historical Commission

One Opening

The mission of the Sharpsburg Historical Commission is to identify and preserve for posterity significant architectural, natural, and historic sites within the boundaries of Sharpsburg.

Position Description:
We are seeking volunteer commission members who can commit to monthly meetings and ongoing independent and team-based projects designed to fulfil the commission’s mission. Current projects include oral histories, photo archive scanning, and historical marker design and installation, among others. Commission members serve a four-year term. Residence or work/family connection to Sharpsburg is not required, but an interest in the area’s history is strongly encouraged.
Preferred experience includes:
Historic district/property nomination
Archival creation and maintenance (photo and artifact)
Oral History
Municipal historic guidelines/architectural review boards
Historic/historic property research
Project management
