Police Social Work

The office of the Police Social Worker offers a wide range of services. It is a grant-funded, full-time position beginning in 2023. Mary Bauer, MSW is the Police Social Worker and works alongside the Sharpsburg Borough Police Officers in a co-responder model to respond to 911 calls and provide other services. Mary offers support and trauma-informed, therapeutic services on scene and then provides follow-up services to Sharpsburg residents.

Services offered by the Police Social Worker include:  

  • Crisis Intervention  
  • De-escalation
  • Victim Advocacy
  • Case Management
  • Short-term counseling 
  • Family mediation  
  • Referrals to services in Allegheny County  
  • Assist with locating and obtaining resources  
  • Education to parents and families regarding presenting issues  
  • Community events & engagement  
  • Support to all individuals regardless of involvement with Sharpsburg Police

A little about Mary 

Mary earned her Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Criminal Justice from Mercyhurst University in 2022. Mary then went on to earn her Master of Social Work with a clinical and forensic focus from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in 2023. Mary was the Sharpsburg Borough Police Department Social Work Intern from August 2022 until May 2023 and then was hired full time through a grant. Mary has experience working with all populations and all forms of crises.
