Commissions
There are several Commissions, all of which are comprised of Council-appointed volunteers. These Commissions perform valuable functions in the Borough and serve primarily in an advisory role. There are frequently openings on one or more of the Commissions. If you are interested in serving on a Commission or otherwise volunteering, contact the Borough’s administrative office and check the website often as any openings will be posted.
Parks and Recreation Commission
The Parks and Recreation Commission is a newly created Commission, and it works on issues related to the infrastructure contained in the Borough’s parks. The Commission also will be working on increasing the recreational events and activities in the parks for the enjoyment of residents, business owners and visitors.
Meeting information: 3rd Monday at 6pm in Council Chambers
Human Rights Commission
The Human Rights Commission works on issues related to human rights in the borough. They can educate and provide recommendations to Council. Term lengths vary.
Meeting information: 2nd Tuesday at 7pm in even months in Council Chambers
Historical Commission
The Historical Commission works on preserving the rich history of the Borough through projects and educational opportunities.

Planning Commission
The planning commission is charged with land use and land development. They make recommendations to Council. Commissioners serve four-year terms.
Meeting information: 2nd Thursday at 6pm in Council Chambers
Zoning Hearing Board
The Zoning Hearing Board hears and renders recommendations to Council regarding specific types of land use actions, including requests for variances. Commissioners serve three-year term.
Meeting information: No set schedule and meet on an as-needed basis. All meetings are advertised and posted to the website.
Civil Service Commission
The Civil Service Commission is an entity that regulates the employment of civil servants. In Sharpsburg, this Commission certifies the hiring list for full-time police officers. Commissioners serve six-year terms.

Property Maintenance Appeals Board
The Property Maintenance Appeals Board hears appeals from individuals who have been sent a notice for property maintenance code violations. Commissioners serve three-year terms.

Vacancy Board
If there is a vacancy that must be filled (Council, Mayor, Tax Collector) and Council is unable to fill the position for any reason within 30 days, then the Vacancy Board shall fill the position within 15 days. The individual serves a one-year term.
