We are thrilled to announce that the Borough has been awarded $1M from the Allegheny County Health Department’s Clean Air Act Fund to construct a resiliency microgrid on the DPW garage and yard. Once constructed, the microgrid will generate enough electricity and have enough storage that we will be able to operate critical functions in the event of a catastrophic power outage even if the grid is out for an extended period of time of up to two weeks. During non-catastrophic times – which we hope is always! – the microgrid will generate enough electricity to make the Borough a net exporter of energy, which will eliminate all parts of the Borough’s electric bills that are consumption-based and even produce additional revenue that can be used to offset other costs.
We will be working with Allegheny County to get execute a grant agreement for the funds and will then put the project out to bid. Thank you to the Board of Health for awarding the full amount requested to build this critical project. Stay tuned for updates!
