Updated Water Meters

The Sharpsburg Borough received through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) a grant to acquire water meters and distribute them free to income eligible residents of Sharpsburg.

Residents must meet the Allegheny County Guidelines for the year 2008 based on a 50% Median Income Area. If your GROSS income falls within this guideline based on the number residing in the home, please bring a copy of your 2008 income tax return or other proof of income to the Sharpsburg Borough Administration Office. Please refer to the Allegheny County 2008 Income Guidelines table below:

Even if your income does not fall within the above levels, you may qualify under other "hardship" circumstances. Please contact the Borough offices for details.

The meters are at no cost to you and are available at the Sharpsburg Borough Administration Office. WE DO NOT INSTALL the meters. Once the meter is installed, the Head of the Water Department will install the remote and seal the meter by appointment only. Please contact or stop by the Borough with any questions.

Public Works Department

The Public Works Department in the Borough has five crewmen who are responsible for street maintenance and repair, water lines, sewer lines, as well as the salting and removal of snow on the Borough streets during the winter months. Water service is provided from within the Borough through the Sharpsburg Water Department. All water is pumped from wells and treated at the plant which resides along the Allegheny River.

All water bills are collected at the Borough Office.

Trash Collection

Residential trash collection service in the Borough takes place every TUESDAYS throughout 2011. Whenever there is a national holiday during the week, the collection will be one day behind during that week. The following is a list of holidays affecting the 2011 trash collection schedule:

  • Memorial Day - Monday, May 30
  • Independence Day – Monday, July 4th
  • Labor Day - Monday, September 5th
  • Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 24th

Waste Management, North Huntingdon Hauling provides trash service for the Borough. Trash must be placed at the curb by 6:00 AM and is not to be put out prior to 6:00 PM the night before. Street Sweeping Dates

The following are dates in 2011 when there will be street cleaning service occurring in the Borough. Please make sure your vehicles are not parked in the designated street sweeping areas during the morning hours of those days. Your vehicle will be ticketed. Street sweeping begins in April and ends in November; on the first and third Mondays & Wednesdays of each month.

April 4, 6, 18 and 20; May 2, 4, 16, and 18; June 6, 8, 20 and 22; July 6, 18, and 20; August 1, 3, 15 and 17; September 7, 19, and 21; October 3, 5, 17 and 19 and November 2, 7, 14 and 16.

Building Inspector

Ed Crates is the Building Inspector and Zoning Officer for the Borough of Sharpsburg. Building inspections are performed once a week. Newly sold properties are required to be inspected prior to the closing. The building inspector will never go into a property without being invited in or without someone being at the property. If you would like to file a complaint regarding a code or building violation, please call the borough office at (412) 781-0546.

Usage and Occupancy Permits

Usage Permits are a Borough requirement for any new business desiring to establish in Sharpsburg. You can obtain a Usage Permit at the Borough Municipal Building, located at 1611 Main Street.

Occupancy Permits are required for property owners desiring to lease their space to tenants, whether this is residential, business, or industrial.  According to Borough regulations it is the landlords responsibility to register NEW tenants with the borough office so up to date information is available for emergency purposes. Occupancy Permits can be obtained at the Borough Municipal Building.

Tax Collection

The Borough collects real estate tax from properties within Sharpsburg. Additionally, the Borough is responsible for collecting Fox Chapel School District taxes from residents living in Sharpsburg.

All delinquent real estate taxes are paid to Keystone Municipal Collections, not the Borough of Sharpsburg.

Earned Income Tax (EIT), collected on earned wages and self-employed income, are collected by the Jordan Tax Agency. The Jordan Tax Agency collects EIT for all communities within the Fox Chapel Area School District for 2010 - 2011 tax-years.
